Be Safe on the Road This Christmas

As Christmas starts to approach, the traffic on motorways around the country increases – people heading to the shops to do their Christmas shopping, going out to Christmas events and of course people travelling home to see family – the weekend of Christmas is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Many of us will be using the motorways at this time of the year, and it is important to be aware of the rules of the motorways in the UK, and it is definitely something that you should brush up on if you are not a regular user of the motorways in the UK.

Things like what to do if you break down on the motorway, what chapter 8 chevrons like this vehiclechevrons.com mean when they are on a vehicle, and what some of the motorway signs mean are all things that you should be aware of when you are doing motorway driving.

You also should make sure that you have completed vehicle checks and that your car is safe and roadworthy before heading onto the motorway, especially if it is a long journey. Here are some of the things that you should check on your vehicle if you are going to be making a journey in the winter…

The Battery – Temperature changes can cause problems for a car battery and the winter is the most likely time that your battery might stop working. To prevent this from happening you can cover the bonnet of the car to stop the battery from becoming too cold. If you have had trouble starting your car, it is a good idea to have your battery checked by a professional.

Lights – These are a highly important part of the safety of your vehicle and in the winter, they will of course get a lot more use. It is an offence to have lights that are not working, so make sure that all of the lights on your car are working correctly before you set off.

Windscreen and Wipers – Before you drive anywhere, the windscreen should be clear, and your wipers should also be working correctly as you may need to clear the windscreen whilst on your journey. You should also ensure that the windscreen washer fluid compartment is full.
