You walk into a space and can tell it is special. But what makes it special? Is it when the wall finishes? The location? Perhaps the amount of furniture? There is something almost unspecific. It could be light.
Good architects are very concerned with light. You see, many architects, most even, think about the box. The box is the house. And when they do think about light, they think about the box’s relationship to the sun. They think about how it will be in the winter and in the summer, and how it will be on a cloudy day and on a sunny day. They think about what that light will do. Now, shadow might sound like something bad, but it is good. And that it is so important. For example, imagine two houses. Both houses have a wall running along the east side. Both houses have a window in the wall along the east side. Both houses are almost identical. But they are not identical. The house with the east-facing window will have a window that casts a beautiful shadow, giving the space a changing and pleasant atmosphere. The house with the window facing north will not have that shadow.
That house with the window facing the north may not have been the owner’s choice. Perhaps they wanted the kitchen to be on the south side of the house, away from the street, and also wanted the kitchen to have a north-facing window, so that it could get a lot of morning light. That is a perfectly reasonable goal, and so architects will work around it.
Light is not just about windows and walls and sunlight. It is about when and how the light gets in. Architects want to design buildings that have a varied amount of light during the day. They want the space to feel like a space, not like a box.
