How does a SIM work?
SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. A SIM card contains a subscriber ‘key’ which enables you to be identified by the network – and use the services to which you are subscribed.
A SIM card does not necessarily need an internet connection as it can still provide key services when offline. However, many people opt for a SIM with data because they like to use internet apps when they are on the go.
Types of SIM cards
There are a number of different types of SIM cards available to suit most requirements. The main types of SIM card available are:
– International SIM card: enables you to connect to the local network without incurring roaming charges.
– Prepaid SIM card: allows you to decide in advance how much you want to spend (on calls, data, etc.).
– European SIM card: this is great if you are visiting multiple European countries.
– Multi network data SIM card: a special type of SIM card that can connect to more than one mobile network simultaneously. It switches between networks depending on which has the strongest signal available in the current location. These SIMs are used in a range of applications including pumps, turbines, air-con units, alarms and CCTV systems

SIM card sizes
The three main sizes of SIM cards are Standard (25x15x0.76mm), Micro (15x12x0.76mm) and Nano (12.3×8.8 x 0.67mm).
Standard SIM cards tend to be found in older/early generation phones whilst Micro SIMs are compatible with Apple iPhone 4, 4s and iPad, and Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, Galaxy Express Prime and Galaxy J2.
Nano SIM cards are found in newer smartphones such as iPhones (since iPhone 5), iPad Air and iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy Express Prime, Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5 and Google Pixel phones (Pixel through to Pixel 4).
